In over ten years of travelling through India, working with Indian incense makers, and perfecting our craft, we can honestly say that there are a scarcely a handful of genuinely traditional incense makers left. Mass production is taking over, and the norm is now to buy a cheap packet of chemical, quite unpleasant agarbatti from the local market and be done with it. The ancient art of gathering botanicals, understanding how to dry them, blending them to appropriate scents, and even the sacred rituals for which they were originally used is fading away.
But not quite! Dhuni traditional incense is based on ancient family recipes, handed down through the generations. Our master incense maker comes from a caste who traditionally work in the incense field. They know about the plants and, though they live in the south of India, make an annual pilgrimage to the foothills of the Himalayas to harvest specific plants which only grow at altitude. Since wild medicinal and aromatic plants are now in short supply in the Himalayas, this has to be done with care and attention to the environment, replanting and propagating existing sources, and avoiding certain plants which have been picked almost to extinction. Only plentiful and sustainable plants are used in Dhuni traditional incense, which is why we avoid sandalwood, for example, for which we haven’t been able to find a source we consider ethically sound.
Dhuni traditional incense blends are rolled by hand of course, and dried on flat rooftops under the warm south indian sun. We do not use any artificial drying machines, which is why during monsoon our production grinds almost to a standstill because it’s simply not possible to get anything dried while the rains are pelting down. This is the customary season of rest for incense makers, when they put up their feet, enjoy some chai, and recover their strength after a hard years work.
Dhuni traditional incense uses only Indian grown plant materials, Indian workers, and our ancient agarbatti scent blends. We urge you to try it now, and to bring a very special product – perhaps unique – into your yoga practice, meditation, or simply the atmosphere of your house.
